Summary

Now Matters Now is an online suicide prevention program designed to teach life-saving skills and coping mechanisms to those most at risk. Developed by Group Health and a team of advisors, the program was recently adopted by Facebook and made available to their entire community of members.

Background

In the United States in 2013, over 40,000 people died from suicide. As our nation’s 10th leading cause of death, suicide prevention is a national priority, and yet prevention programs targeting those most at risk remain severely lacking. “Now Matters Now,” is the culmination of a 3-year study developed by the Group Health Research Institute. Along with a team of suicide survivors, loved ones, and researchers, Group Health conducted a series of focus groups with those most closely affected by suicide. Using the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) methods developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, the team created a series of practical tools, including videos of real people telling real stories of coping mechanisms that worked for them when they needed them most.

Approach

Working closely with Group Health and a team of advisors, we developed an engaging and approachable website and identity for this life-saving project. The site provides a series of practical tools and coping mechanisms that have worked for real people in those same situations when they needed them most. We took inspiration from the simplicity and honesty behind the content and chose to display the content simply. If you go to the homepage you’ll see we use real faces from the team of suicide survivors, loved ones, and researchers, sharing real stories from their lives.

In 2015, Facebook partnered with Now Matters Now to tackle suicide prevention and provide immediate options of support to all of their users. Members who see or report suicidal posts on Facebook will now automatically be linked to Now Matters Now videos and resources.
