It was important that the new logo still felt familiar and the characters had a kinship to the old logo. Lake Flato’s new logo reflects the firm’s core values, expressing modernity, clarity, and thoughtful design—perfectly suited for a brand that prioritizes precision and balance.Lake Flato
When I think of Lake Flato, I think of the dog.Lake Flato Interviewee
The dog, based on a sculpture acquired by David and Ted, was used as an informal mascot for many years. Our research showed the importance of the dog in their brand.
We reimagined the dog as a living logo – drawn by Lake Flato team members over time. This creates a flexible and evolving visual expression that honors the firm’s culture.
The site is built around intuitive, engaging user pathways and visual storytelling, ensuring that each visit feels exploratory. As with the brand, clarity and accessibility are emphasized, never losing sight of the people and stories behind the work.Lake Flato
Project filters aid with storytelling, and project thumbnails are engineered to dynamically change based on visitor selections.
Project case studies include dynamic video assets, all project details, and storytelling alongside media to provide context for the visitor.
The team can tell their stories of commitment to sustainability, design, and community through flexible layout modules that can grow and evolve as they do.
These flexible custom page layout modules are easy to identify and assemble in the CMS.
Throughout the site we leveraged custom layout modules for overall practice storytelling.
We made it easy for website administrators to select colors for page sections, showing color previews within the CMS.
Notes from the Field is a conduit for connecting kindred individuals... This collection of essays, interviews, fiction, poetry and art is intended to celebrate our core commitment to creating environments that nurture life and enrich communities.Lake Flato
As part of the announcement for the new brand and website, we designed the book Notes From the Field, curated by Lake Flato, as a gift for clients, employees, and their community.
Such a major redesign required thoughtful planning and a deep understanding of the firm
We traveled to beautiful San Antonio, TX to spend time with the Lake Flato team at their HQ, understand their story, and gain inspiration.
Elements of their collections, materiality, and landscape informed our decisions related to structures, tones, content, colors, and purpose.
Early site architecture and wireframe sketches inspired by our visit. The idea to “Enter Through the Garden” – a strong element of Lake Flato projects — became a guiding mantra for our approach.

Listening to the Land
Lake Flato, a Texas-based architecture firm that works globally, is known for its regionally inspired, environmentally responsive designs that blur the lines between indoors and out. Through extensive research, including interviews with team members, collaborators, and clients, we came to understand Lake Flato as a practice deeply rooted in place, people, and purpose. Our approach to both brand and digital experience was grounded in a number of guiding principles drawn from that discovery: a sense of poetry, a connection to place, and a collective voice. These ideas shaped how we represented the firm, not just as a maker of beautiful spaces, but as a community of thoughtful, collaborative designers working in harmony with the land.
