End Gender Apartheid

Turning Awareness into Action

Women and girls who live under the regimes of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Taliban in Afghanistan live in an extreme, systematic and structural war against them. This treatment has a name: GENDER APARTHEID. We worked closely with a coalition of human rights attorneys and activists who acted as creative directors for the campaign. Together we developed a digital campaign urging governments and international bodies to recognize the systematic oppression of women in Iran and Afghanistan as a crime under international law. The campaign’s open letter—signed by thousands—was supported by a wide-reaching media effort.

Getting the Term into the Mainstream

The term “gender apartheid” has gained significant traction, appearing in major outlets such as The Guardian, CNN, and Forbes, and was echoed in a UN statement warning that Iran’s hijab law could amount to gender apartheid. The campaign continues to build global momentum to expand legal definitions and drive international action against gender-based oppression.
