UI Designer

Who we are

Civilization is a design practice based in Seattle, WA,* with team members and clients worldwide. We specialize in building identity systems, digital experiences, printed materials, environmental graphics and exhibitions.

Our clients and partners share our commitment to creating a positive impact in the areas of arts, culture, design education, reproductive justice, climate action, architecture, and health equity, among others. Along with our client work, we strive to break down barriers to access in design through our Design Lecture Series and our gallery Non-Breaking Space.

Who we are looking for

Our team is seeking a talented UI Designer with experience creating intuitive and accessible interfaces.  This position will require strong interaction, layout, typography skills and working independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Design low-, mid-and high-fidelity visual designs, user interfaces, and prototypes for web and digital experiences
  • Collaborate with internal teams (Account Management, Design, Development)
  • Work from wireframes, with feedback from stakeholders, to develop engaging user interactions that excite and delight
  • Design UI elements and tools such as navigation menus, search boxes, tabs, and widgets for our digital assets
  • Identify and troubleshoot UX problems (e.g., usability, responsiveness, accessibility, etc)
  • Experiment, in collaboration with the Design team, with multiple approaches to strategy and design to achieve user and client goals
  • Demonstrate good skills with layout, typography, web technology and standards, and new creative arenas as they emerge
  • Understand technical possibilities, technical workflows, and technical limitations with an emphasis on UX and UI
  • Designs UI mock-ups and prototypes that illustrate how sites will look and function and works closely with internal and external developers to realize this vision
  • Attends and participates in video meetings with internal team and clients
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of design systems to ensure consistency across company design teams and digital properties
  • Edit photography and other digital assets
  • Participate in regular internal reviews and client meetings to review and present work
  • Willingness to review work-in-progress designs with other creatives often in order to improve quality of design and share feedback on the work of others for the good of the team.

Qualifications

  • A portfolio of professional design work demonstrating sole responsibility for UI deliverables
  • 3+ years of experience creating and implementing UI design
  • Strong visual and typography skills
  • Experience working on projects for external clients
  • Can help facilitate workshops and presentations to clients
  • Has worked with development teams on website or product development
  • Highly organized with an acute attention to detail
  • Solutions-oriented and collaborative
  • Ability to multitask and juggle multiple projects and shifting priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent communication skills with internal teams and with clients
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attends and participates in video meetings with internal team and clients
  • Working knowledge of the following technologies and software: Figma, Google Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, AfterEffects), HTML, and CSS.

  • 100% remote position possible. The team is currently working remotely due to COVID-19 but there is an option to return to the Seattle studio when it is safe to do so
