Tendai “Baba” Maraire of Shabazz Palaces has joined up with Hussein Kalonji to form a new act, Chimurenga Renaissance.
Chimurenga Renaissance released their debut LP, riZe vadZimu riZe, in March 2014 via Seattle label Brick Lane (rather than Shabazz Palaces’ usual label home, Sub Pop). Mixed by Erik Blood, the album also features guest appearances by Palaceer Lazaro, Mall Saint, M1 of Dead Prez, and THEE Satisfaction.
Tendai approached us to create and execute a unique packaging concept for the album. The album is available on a limited edition, shield-engraved, wooden USB-drive necklace contained in one of three custom designed stash boxes inspired by the Zimbabwean Coat of Arms. We also adapted the artwork to high-grade 12-inch vinyl format.
